What is TRC at Smyrna?

The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center (TRC) at Smyrna is a state-operated comprehensive vocational rehabilitation training center and is one of eight such facilities in the nation. Services are provided on campus and the majority of clients live on campus in residential living units while receiving services. Length of programs of service offered at TRC vary depending upon the individual client's interest, abilities, and needs. All program participants must be eligible clients of the Department of Human Services' Division of Rehabilitation Services.

Auto Maintenance/Detailing

The Auto Maintenance and Detailing program will assist students in learning and developing the skills necessary to meet the current demands in an entry-level position in the automobile lubrication and detail/cleanup industry.  This is a 16-week program for Detailing and a 16-week program for Lubrication.  Students will complete one or both programs.  The program includes videos, lectures and guided classroom discussions with extensive hands-on experience, field trips and practical application.  Students may have the possibility of external training and/or internships.

Business Education

The mission of the Business Education Training program is to prepare students for entry-level employment in a broad range of clerical and customer service positions.  For students with previous work experience, the program will be customized to fit their needs so they can re-enter the job market.  For students with little or no work experience, they will be provided with hands-on training as well as classroom training to prepare them to enter the job market.   Each student will be assigned a personal workstation in the classroom and will interact with the instructor and other students simulating a business office environment.

This course is 20 weeks in duration. It includes mostly individualized instruction with some group format instruction and hands-on experience.  Students may have the opportunity for external training with a business in the community.

Commercial Cleaning

The purpose of the Commercial Cleaning Training Program is to prepare students for an entry-level position in the cleaning/janitorial industry. Upon completion of the course, the student will be equipped to display skills applicable to this trade area such as: positive work behaviors, market ready skills, punctuality, and good personal hygiene.  Internships may be utilized within the commercial cleaning service industry to provide pre-employment experience in the career field.
This course is 12 weeks in duration.  Methods of instruction include lectures, demonstrations, field trips, and practical application. 

Food Service

The Food Service Training program prepares students for an entry-level position in the food service industry. Upon completion of the course, the student will be equipped to display skills applicable to this trade area such as: positive work behaviors, market ready skills, punctuality, and good personal hygiene.  Internships may be utilized within the food service industry to provide pre-employment experience in the career field.  This course is 18 weeks in duration.  Methods of instruction include lectures, demonstrations, field trips, and practical application.

Garden Center-Nursery

The Garden Center Training program provides students with the skills needed to obtain entry level employment in a Garden Center career.  Students will learn grounds care including: mowing, trimming, watering and weed eating.  The program contains classroom discussions, videos, hands-on experience and some lecture time.  This program is currently completed at the student’s pace and according to their individual needs.

Manufacturing Logistics

The Manufacturing Logistics training program is planned to give students the opportunity to: Acquire a basic understanding of the tools, materials, and basic tasks required of an entry level manufacturing production worker, warehousing and retail sales industry. Areas covered include safety, Ergonomics, Tools and equipment’s, maintenance/operation, basic manufacturing tasks, assembly activities, Team work and collaboration etc. Acquire and develop desirable work habits/attitudes to enable a student to work as productive, cooperative, and successful employee. Acquire and develop employment seeking skills.

Power Equipment

The mission of this training program is to prepare students for an entry-level position in the warehousing industry. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to display skills applicable to this trade area such as; positive work behaviors, market ready skills, customer relations, punctuality, and good personal hygiene.  Forklift operator is designed for participants who meet the requirements and are interested in forklift operator positions in warehousing and manufacturing industries; however, forklift training is only provided to those that qualify.  Internships are utilized within the warehousing industry to provide pre-employment experience in the career field. Progress reports are accomplished regularly, and assessment of progress or lack thereof is addressed at that time.

This course is 16 weeks in duration. Methods of instruction may include lectures, demonstrations, field trips, ETO/ITO, and practical application. Students may have the opportunity for external training with a company in the community.

Retail

The Retail program is designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain an entry level position in the retail industry. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate their readiness for employment. Positive work behaviors and market ready skills will enable students to be more independent, motivated, and successful.  This course spans 12 weeks with a curriculum that includes individualized and group format instruction as well as hands-on experience in a retail simulated environment.  Some students may have the opportunity to enroll in a Walgreens REDI program in their home community upon completion of the TRC Retail Training Program.
