ELLevate Learning ELL Program of Anderson County Schools hosts Healthy Summer Festival

On Saturday, June 11, the ELLevate Learning ELL Program of Anderson County Schools, together with our community partner, Free Clinic of Oak Ridge, hosted the Healthy Summer Festival (La Festival de Verano Saludable). The event was held from 5:00-8:00 in the Oak Ridge Mobile Home Park located adjacent to Claxton Elementary School. Hot dogs, chips, and drinks were provided for all residents. During the event, parents were registered for free health care services with the Free Clinic and were provided free COVID-19 vaccinations.

A bilingual book fair was provided for children with texts at all age-levels and informational booklets in Spanish were sent home with parents about the importance of reading with your child in the home language. We were also delighted to provide a “Mini-Mercado” (little farmer’s market) with free oranges, limes, avocados, onions, dried rice, and dried beans for our families. Each family went home with a bag of fresh, healthy food that would provide at least one family meal. A full bilingual staff, a nurse practitioner, as well as the entire ELL teaching staff, was present to strengthen our connection to our families and the community.

This site was selected in order to bring healthcare, literacy, and healthy food to the location where many of our ELL families reside. Permission was granted by the owner of the mobile home park and we plan to do additional Healthy Festivals in the fall and spring of the upcoming academic year.
