Anderson County Schools partner with children's hospital to bring students healthcare (WBIR)

Posted Date: 01/30/2025

CLAXTON, Tenn. — Anderson County Schools and the East Tennessee Children's Hospital are teaming up to help make healthcare more accessible to kids, and to keep them from missing school.

"If the nurse would see them in the clinic, they would end up being picked up, taken to the doctor and most likely wouldn't end up returning for the school day," said Kathryn Price, Director of Nursing at Anderson County Schools.

The partnership allows students to be seen by a nurse practitioner from the East Tennessee Children's Hospital without having to leave the nurse's office.

"You're gonna get a highly skilled expert nurse practitioner, Myra, on the call with you! So, you can see her every time you do a visit with us, she is very experienced in pediatrics, and she can help your child get better faster, get them the care that they need, right here in the school," said Lauren Birdwell, Marketing and Communications Manager with Children's Hospital.

During a telehealth call, students will have their vitals, ears, throat and eyes checked and their heartbeat listened to. After the visit, if a prescription is needed, the East Tennessee Children's Hospital can write the prescription and have it filled at your regular pharmacy or have it shipped to your house the next day.

"This is really just another tool in our toolbox to get children healthcare in East Tennessee. So we not only have our primary care network, we have after-hours care at our urgent cares, we of course have a 24/7 emergency department, but then we also have this service here in the schools during the day," said Birdwell.

The school district said it has seen a 55% return to class rate for students who have used the program, meaning students do not have to be taken out of class to go to the doctor. They also said that students don't have to wait to get an appointment, they can be seen by the nurse in as fast as six minutes.

The program currently is at Claxton Elementary in Claxton and Lake City Elementary in Rocky Top. The East Tennessee Children's Hospital does work with some insurance providers, if parents are interested in signing up you can do that here.
