KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Pella Player of the Week winner Waylon LaRue continued a standout season for Anderson County with 205 yards and four touchdowns in the Mavericks win over Gibbs.
The senior running back was quick to give credit to everyone around him.
“I have to thank the lord and thank my offensive line because first of all they’re the one who does it for you. They’re the one who opens it up for everybody if it wasn’t for those guys, you couldn’t make anything happen,” LaRue said. “So at the end of the day it relies on the offensive line. I’ve got great teammates as well. I got something that helps me out a lot so its pretty easy at the end of the day.”
In his final year with the Mavs, LaRue has been soaking it all in.
“I love being in this type of environment. I mean it’s beautiful out here. You can’t play in a better stadium when the fireworks go off,” he said. “It’s awesome and just seeing the little kids and just being a leader for those little kids — somebody that they look up to it’s just a great feeling.”
During his time playing for Anderson County, LaRue has became a role model for those younger than him around the community, a role he welcomes.
“I got a younger brother and I’ve grown up with him and just having him being able to look up to me. It’s something special feeling. Just having younger kids look up to you its just a ten times better feeling because after games they want to get pictures with you. And then you know social media at the end of the day, their parent, and all that so its a great. Its just great.”
Anderson County will finish out their season at South Doyle this Friday, kickoff set for 7 p.m.
